FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
16 September 2009
A new community centre is being formed to serve the needs of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transsexual and Questioning
community in the Victoria region. We believe that a Community Centre for the LGBTQ people of the South Island
is overdue. There is an economically significant LGBTQ community in Victoria whose needs are not largely being met.
The South Island Pride Community Centre will be a resource that provides our existing organizations meeting space,
as well as provide a place for additional programs and services for our community, especially for our youth and
seniors.
The SIPCCentre will provide opportunities for peer socializing and support for our LGBTQ community in a safe and
inclusive environment especially for our youth and elderly who are often isolated. Staff at the Centre will work
to provide education on important topics for both the LGBTQ community and the larger community of Victoria and its
agencies. Our Centre will welcome people of all ages, cultures, genders, and sexual identities.
We are very excited to announce an LGBTQ youth program that will run from the Fairfield Gonzales Community Association
Centre beginning the first week of October called the Chill Outzone. Contact Lindsay at the Fairfield Gonzales Centre
for information.
Our next set of programs will be aimed at the 50+ age group in our community.
We envision not just programs, services, a social outlet, and meeting space, but also a venue for our visual and
performing artists and a library to house our literature and educational material. We would also like to include a
drop-in coffee lounge and coffee shop. However, a lot of this will have to wait until we have a physical location. In
the meantime, we are planning to run what programs and services we can through existing locations.
We are hosting our first social event in the form of a dance at the Victoria Event Centre on Broad Street in Victoria,
Thursday, October 1st, 2009, to help raise funds to support the programming we wish to offer this year.
